Trends in Furniture Design – Sustainable Materials

The sustainability agenda has rapidly come to the fore in every aspect of furniture design, from the way in which pieces are constructed to the materials from which they are made.

Re-upholstery has become an ever-increasing part of our business as the awareness of the impact of landfill and a desire for re-use have grown. We continue to be shocked by the number of items that come through our doors which clearly have not been designed or made with any thought of re-use but that, happily, is changing as manufacturers start to focus more on the recyclability of their products and designing for green.

The use of sustainable materials is core to all this. Our customers are rightly increasingly asking us questions about what goes into our seating. All our timber is FSC® Certified and we are Chain-of-Custody Certificate Holders. There are already a lot of eco-friendly fabrics with strong sustainability credentials, from post-industrial and post-consumer recycled polyesters to those woven from natural or plant-based materials such as bamboo, hemp and flax.
